Top Yourself

In my recent downtime I decided to try my first furniture makeover/redo project.
I used 2 dressers that were given to my boyfriend when he was born.
That means these dressers were 23 years old but in relatively good shape.
The project took 3-4 days and I got help from Ron with sanding and polishing.

These are what I started with.
I had already removed the drawers to carry them down the stairs, but they were in the same condition as the rest of the structure. As you can see, the tops were in awful condition. The outer wood was some kind of laminant, making it VERY hard to sand. Especially without a power sander.

Like I said, the sanding didn't go too well.
So, I used a regular white paint and a roller and brush and gave each dresser and the drawers 3 coats so that they would have some sort of a base. This picture was done after 2 coats, you can see that it was still very blotchy and streaky.

Meanwhile, I had some Ron slave labor going on.
After easily removing the very, very, very tarnished drawer pulls with a screw driver, I soaked them in Brasso for a few hours. Then Ron & I scrubbed foreverrrr. This was probably the hardest part of the whole project. I forgot to take a before picture of the handles, but they came out very shiny.

The patterned drawers were the result of a happy accident.
I had bought 4 cans of white semi-gloss spray paint, which was used on everything.
1 can of neon day-glow pink, and one can of brightest royal blue spray paint.
The blue was a semi-gloss, but the pink was only available in matte so I got 1 can of a shiny clear spray paint.

I was planning on painting the drawers solid pink & blue, but I ran out of the pink paint before I was done so I improvised by adding white in some places. And then I did the same with the blue. It definitely ended up being way cooler this way anyway.

And here are the finished products!
I love them so much!
